Mechanically, they’re nearly identical—especially the GT7 generation. The main differences are trim naming, some tuning details, and the JDM-only 1.6L variants (which we don't recommend outside of dense cities). XV is the Japanese domestic name; Crosstrek is its global badge.

Most buyers should target the XV GT7 (2.0L AWD), which aligns directly with second-gen Crosstrek models globally. Avoid confusing GPE (Hybrid) or GT3/GT6 (1.6L) variants unless you know exactly what you're after.

In most cases, yes. Japanese XVs are better maintained, have lower mileage, and come with detailed condition sheets from strict Shaken inspections. Local Crosstreks, especially from rust-prone or extreme climates, often hide expensive future issues.
